Then-constructions in mathematical texts

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2019

Abstract

The paper explores the possibilities for constructional analysis of functions of a word in a specific text type. Five constructions of the word then found in a corpus of mathematical university textbooks are described in detail: logical then, hypothetical conditional then, temporal then, resultative then, and summarising then.

While this is not meant to be an exhaustive list of constructions of then, it is apparent from the results of the analysis that the constructional perspective offers more precise information on the use of then in mathematical texts.
