The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia was the first ad hoc international court established since the Nuremberg Tribunal. Despite some teething troubles it has proved a viable international judicial institution.

The author highlights impressive achievements that have had significant impacts on the decision-making of other international, and also national, courts adjudicating core international crimes. It shows the challenges in the investigation of leadership cases.

Certain shortcomings are also mentioned, since identifying successes and failures is critical in supporting similar efforts in the future.
