Abstract

Soon after the establishment of the Czechoslovakia in 1918, a new and truly unmistakable phenomenon - TRAMPING - appeared on the scene. It wasn't just a temporary hobby of youth, it became its opposite.

Despite the initial distrust of parents or teachers, despite the displeasure of state authorities and youth organizations, the phenomena immensely growthed. During the 1930s it attracted tens of thousands of young people by the freedom during weekends, even just for day and half.

It gave them possibility to experience sexual freedom to. However, the Czech society has also occasionally voiced that tramping is actually a sexual movement.

On the other hand tramping cannot be perceived just only as campfire romanticism and escape from the degenerated cities to the temple of healing nature. Tramping was an integral part of the First Czechoslovak Republic's system, and in the end the system was able to benefit from tramping as is evideni the case of commercialization of tramp songs and music by entertaining industry.

The tramp's sport and the international success of the tramp's athletes also became unmistakable. At least for a time, the tramping have become an attractive target for political parties and their propaganda.

The history of the tramping in the First Republic is thus an interesting history which reflect changes in Czech interwar society and the young Czechoslovak state.
