Is the "I" at fault for everything? : Mindfulness and self-transcendence

Abstract

Feelings of inadequacy can be hidden behind many more externally visible symptoms which motivate the client to start psychotherapy. However, the "fear of being inadequate" assumes a belief in a more or less stable Self with fairly distinctive and permanent characteristics.

The intensive practice of mindfulness meditation leads to a radical change in self-understanding. The paper deals with the role of self-transcendence in the process of psychotherapeutic change and with the impact of self-referential processing on well-being and mental health.
