Goals of teaching mathematics

Abstract

The article deals with the author's view of the goals of teaching mathematics. He distinguishes four: a pupil's relationship to mathematics in general and causal thinking in particular, social abilities, cognitive and meta-cognitive abilities, knowledge.

The rest of the article is devoted to the building of knowledge, in particular to the phenomenon of understanding in mathematics. Illustrations are presented of what it means to understand in mathematics.
