Abstract

This study is focused on the context of an oil painting depicting John Zizka of Trocnov which once was a part of the portrait collection of Ferdinand II, Archduke of Austria at Ambras Castle. Besides the traditional perception of John Zizka of Trocnov, as it was presented by the artists during the 19th and 20th Centuries as an important figure of Bohemian history, John Zizka was also perceived in an external context during the 16th Century.

In this context, Zizka is not only seen as a Czech national hero but as a dreaded Hussite fighter who became famous as a victor on the battlefields.
