What can we hear when we listen to Cage's famous work 4' 33'', and what is the point of the work? The paper critically considers Cage's thesis that environmental sounds occurring during the performance of the work are music. Within the framework of several possible interpretations of the work, and of two assumptions of Cage's music aesthetics, a related question of the paper concerns the perceptibility of silence that Cage rejected.
