In his late philosophy, Patočka attempted a revival of phenomenology as an investigation of appearing as such. He proposed a project of an a-subjective phenomenology, the aim of which is to free the phenomenal field from a metaphysical closure into an a priori framework of the egological subjectivity.
The opening of the phenomenal field, the opening of appearing as such can be seen in the interplay between the bodily conditioned donation of the sensible and an understanding of its being, as complementary moments of the world's pre-givenness which is an unfounded "spatium of the possible" for every single appearance.
