Abstract
The chapter traces functions of the comic and the vulgar on the margins of the medieval visual world. On the example of the jesters as commentators, the indicators of transcendence or the reminder how foolish are those whom the worlds deems wise, I show the comic to be a part of the of a serious system of representations.
