FREEDOM AND HOLINESS. CONTRIBUTIONS FROM JON SOBRINO AND POPE FRANCIS

Publication at Protestant Theological Faculty |
2019

Abstract

This article examines the attention to holiness in liberation theology and in Pope Francis. Drawing on four understandings of holiness developed by Jon Sobrino, who speaks of the holiness of poverty and love, of political holiness and of the holiness of joy, the article shows their implications for liberation.

It compares them with the concluding document of the Fifth General Meeting of the Latin American Bishops in Aparecida (written under the then Cardinal Bergoglio) and with Pope Francis' Exhortation Gaudete et exsultate, showing how common features are present in all three approaches, emphasising the importance of liberation as an end and means of holiness.
