2019

Abstract

The paper explores the mysticism of light in within the Orthodox Christian tradition. It deals with the motif of the divine light that is above all creation transforms not just the human heart, but also touches the world together with its social structure and transforms nature.

In particular, the papers deals with the concept of divine light in Archimandrite Sophrony and his articulation of light that shines deep in the darkness of the human heart. Second it speaks about Mother Maria Skobtsova with her emphasis on light that enlightens not just the heart but has a power to transform the social structures.

Finally it touches the motif of light in starec Isidor from the Gethsemane Skete who is depicted in a short writing by Pavel Florensky. Staretz Isidor complements the previous two examples with his articulation of divine light as penetrating the life of all creatures, all nature.
