Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) and its effects on the nervous system

Abstract

Global interest in the use of medicinal plants has been growing. Current drug discovery research has been inspired by extensive ethnopharmacological applications of natural products.

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) is a medicinal plant native to the Mediterranean region and cultivated around the world. Besides the therapeutic purpose, it is commonly used as a spice and food preservative.

Rosemary is well-known for its antioxidant properties. In this work an updated literature review is presented to clarify the current state of research of this drug, explaining their bioactive substances and their most relevant biological activities.

This work provides an overview of the reported curative properties of rosemary, specifically focused on diseases of the nervous system.
