Abstract

The book From Blood Revenge to Postsocialism. The Development of Anthropological Engagements with the Balkans explores how the Anglophone social and cultural anthropology has related to the Balkan region from the beginning of the 20th century to the present.

The author discusses what topics anthropologists have focused on in the Balkans, whether the anthropological fieldwork in the Balkans has had any specific features, how the Balkans have been constructed in anthropological imagination and whether (and by what means) it has contributed to the development of anthropological theory. The author also tries to answer the question whether the anthropological knowledge of the Balkans has in any way differed from the knowledge of other scholarly disciplines, and what the anthropological research has contributed to the overall knowledge of the Balkans.

The anthropological discourse is also discussed in relation to local research discourses such as ethnology or folkloristics.
