The aim of this contribution is to present a brief overview of the historiography of Mexican colonial art and its evolution from its beginnings in the 19th century up to the contemporary times pointing out some of the most important turning points. The emphasis is put on the presentation and explanation of the fact how the implementation of European taxonomy and approaches of history and history of art influenced and, at the same time, distorted the image of colonial art not only in Mexico, but all over the Latin America.
