The Mesoamerican Ballgame as a Tool of Cultural Revitalization of Contemporary Maya Peoples

Abstract

The contribution deals with the Mesoamerican ballgame. It begins by a short historical overview from the pre-Columbian times until now.

It deals mainly with contemporary renovation of the Mesoamerican ballgame among Maya people in the south of Mexico, especially in touristic zones such as Playa del Carmen. It puts emphasis on proceses of cultural revitalization and shaping identity of local indigenous and mestizo peoples.
