Word-formation adaptation of new Anglicisms in Czech

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2019

Abstract

The paper focuses on word-formation structure of new verbal Anglicisms in contemporary Czech. Adaptation of English verbs means necessary morphological adaptation by means of a (domestic) stem-forming suffix; that suffix is also used when deriving Czech verbs from the English names (nouns).

Analysis of the formation of new verbs from English bases was carried out on the neological material, its main sources were the database Neomat and the syn v6 of the Czech National Corpus. The verb as a primary means of naming an action represents the basis of the utterance; analysing their new creation, the paper assesses the role of word-formation in addressing the new communication needs and to verify up-to-date function of borrowings from English and their use in contemporary Czech communication.
