The book of Zdeněk Brdek sets out to map the theoretical and critical work of Jindřich Chalupecký (1919-1990), an important figure in the Czech intellectual life of the 20th century. Taking a chronological approach, we focus on the period 1930-1948; with Chalupecký arrival on the public media scene as the starting point, and his forced abandonment of it, as a result of the standarized cultural policy after the communist takeover, as the endpoint.
Chalupecký's initial and essential assessment criterion is the artist's search for individuality; his or her striving for a distinctive artistic expression.
