A plain or generic cigarette package means a unified design without any unregulated space. The basic colour is brown-green with a dominating pictorial warning.
It does not restrict the number of brands, but their names are printed in the same font, the same size and same colour. Plain packaging has been adopted in 15 countries already, being discussed in another 14.
EU countries have the right to adopt plain packaging according to the Tobacco Products Directive 2014/40/EU. In the Czech Republic, cigarette boxes are regulated under a Ministry of Agriculture Decree.
The costs are virtually zero for the state - the box is printed by the manufacturer. Based on the experience of countries where such legislation exists, plain packaging has been proven as an effective tobacco control tool.
