Translation as a part of Finnish language teaching

Abstract

Plenary lecture held on a international conference of university lecturers of Finnish dealt with the potential of using translation (especially of literary texts) in teaching Finnish as a foreign language at a university on various levels of CEFR (A1-C1). The aim of the lecture was to rehabilitate translation as a relevant teaching method among others and show its benefits in teaching Finnish.

Theoretical background was Levý's ideas of translation process. Real examples of rhymes, poems, short stories and comics were also shown and discussed.
