Populism in the past and present

Publication at Faculty of Social Sciences |
2019

Abstract

The chapter contains a brief explanation of how populism is defined, focusing on its main actors, i.e. elites, people, and the leader. Part of the interpretation is a remarkable, but logical, elitist paradox of populism.

Then the relationship between populism and democracy is described as well as selected examples of populism typologies. The final part of the text presents the basic characteristics of contemporary European populism.
