Abstract

The contribution focus on the pre-1989 Roma migration to western European from Communist Czechoslovakia. The author use mainly methods of oral history, with the aim to collect the data from Roma witnesses, who emigrated to Western Countries from Communist Czechoslovakia.

The strategies used by the Roma were similar to those of other emigrants from the Communist era. According to memories, the Roma very often used the route to Western Countries across Hungary and Yugoslavia.Using this way, a migratory bridge was created from Czechoslovakia to Austria, Germany, France, Belgium, Sweden, or even to far-away coutries, as USA or Canada.

These migration chains were built not only on family networks, but also on contacts with intermediaries in individual countries.
