Abstract

The chapter describes the life of Jews in Austria since the 11th century, throughout the Middle Ages up to WWII. It examines their living conditions in different periods of Austrian history, their discrimination, persecution, expelling, killing as well as the Tolerance Patent and the rise of liberalism and civil rights and the repeated rise of antisemitism.

The chapter then details the persecution of Jews after 1938, including their deportation, eviction and oppression as well as the situation during the war. It concludes with the post-war approach to the Jewish community.
