"Smoking allowed" - Tobacco in Habsburg monarchy and army and clash of peaceful reality with First World War

Abstract

This contribution in a collective monograph pursues the habit of smoking, which is largely associated with soldiers, on the example of Austria-Hungary. It describes the spreading of smoking in mainstream society with culmination of this process during the period of First World War.

It also covers the experience of war and the relationship of soldiers to smoking, and points out the influence that army had on civil society in this regard.
