Variability of dialogical discourse

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2019

Abstract

The monograph examines the nature, specificity and attempts at typology of discourse with a view to its procedural and dynamic character. The outlined problems are clarified by the systematization of the parameters (linguistic and extra-linguistic) and the derivation of logical correspondences between the parameters, which take into account the discourse variation on the basis of dialogism.

Language phenomena, such as ellipticity, implication, economy and redundancy are also considered in this aspect. The analysis is based on the modern theories of communication, as well as on the presented empiric observations and quantitative linguistic data.

The theoretical model has been tested on material from Bulgarian, Czech and Russian, though it could be used for comparative studies of other languages. The established criteria for the interpretation of discourse give rise to practical rules that support the activities of both the linguist-researcher and the translator-practitioner, as well as of the native and foreign language teacher.
