The Dead in the Countryside: Roadside Memorials Tell About the Changes of the Religious Experience

Abstract

This article focuses on the relatively new phenomenon in Czech countryside, the so called "roadside memorials", a particular type of temporary monuments, built usually by close relatives or friends of a person who died in a traffic accident. The article offers plausible interpretations of the symbolic and/or spiritual meaning of these monuments and of the implicit intent and worldview of those who build them and care for them.

The last part of the article raises the question of discontinuity between the symbolic meaning of roadside memorials and the implicit theology of traditional monuments and memorial stones (often in the shape of the cross) located often at a roadside or near a crossroad, which are quite common in the Czech countryside.
