The topic of Jiří Vácha's doctoral dissertation contributes to the filling of the white spaces of the textile arts and crafts monument fund. The whole research effort lay on the shoulders of the graduate and the volume of processed art-historical material is respectable.
The doctoral student became intimately acquainted with the knowledge of a wide range of fabrics and lace, which he included in the processed catalog. On thirty pages he gave an explanation of fabrics in sacral collections and of textile decor of fabrics in the 17th and 18th centuries.
He then characterized European weaving centers and mentioned the deposition of textile monuments and research methodology. The catalog is prepared with great thoroughness, including a record of the condition of monuments, so it is clear that the items were recorded in situ and that the catalog is an extremely valuable list of monuments whose nature leads to concerns about their long-term preservation.
Thus, a significant portion of the South Bohemian art history fund of historical textiles is registered. The exact material and technological description is a significant contribution by the author to the understanding and preservation of an important monument collection.
For the honest, detailed and dedicated research results, for the heuristically valuable contribution of the work, for the standard language presentation and for the apparatus with only a small number of minor shortcomings and an extremely valuable pictorial appendix, I recommend the submitted doctoral dissertation for defense.
