Petr Brandl, a native of Prague, fulfilled the idea of an irresponsible bohemian artist with his life. He projected a deep inner connection with the art of painting into an extensive work with brushwork expression.
His ecstatic dark-lit altar paintings, empathic portraits and vivid genre scenes, following Škréta, joined the most valuable legacy of the Czech Baroque. Through aristocratic collections in Bohemia, he became acquainted with European, mainly Italian, painting and was influenced by Venetian tenebrism, thanks in part to Michael Václav Halbax.
Apparently, through him, he became acquainted with the means of expression of the Caravaggio and the Caravaggists. The lecture is realized for the cultural public within the third role of the university in the original author's cycle Artist and Man.
