Abstract

The article presents partial results of the study oriented on acquisition of syntax by a Czech child. It is a longitudinal study of the spontaneous language production of a Czech monolingual boy.

The analysed data consist of 21 648 child's utterances (transcriptions of audiorecordings) and a parental diary. The study is based on constructivism and sociopragmatic approach.

It is presupposed that the child actively construct language system by processing input. The article presents the sequence of acquisition of paratactic and hypotactic sentence structures.

The data show that paratactic relations are acquired sooner than hypotactic relations. Development of syntax starts sooner than acquisition of inflection but syntactic development continues even after acquisition of inflection.

The child used one or two major connectors for each syntactic relation but at the end of preschool age, he already had many types of connectors of various semantics at his disposal.
