The role of protease inhibitors in atiretroviral therapy of HIV / AIDS

Abstract

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) protease inhibitors (PIs) appeared in mid-term clinical trials. 90s of the 20th century. For the next two decades, PIs played along with HIV reverse transcriptase inhibitors (RTI) plays an important role in the treatment of HIV infection.

The introduction of PI ushered in the era of combination therapy for HIV infection, commonly known as HAART (Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy). It comes with some variations has maintained until now.

The use of HAART has led to a significant reduction in morbidity as well as mortality and HIV infection thus, it has become a curable but yet incurable disease.
