Vascular age - from patophysiology to clinical application

Publication at First Faculty of Medicine |
2020

Abstract

An estimation of vascular age is one of the options to express individual cardiovascular risk in a patient. Vascular age is defined as the degree of arterial stiffness and vascular morphological changes or as an age when the cardiovascular risk of a healthy person reaches the same level as it reaches in a currently examined patient.

Vascular age parameter is not yet used in large clinical studies, especially with regards to the absence of exact definition and the heterogenity of the methods of determination. In clinical practice, it may be useful as an understandable summary of complex patophysiological events occurring in vascular wall.

The greatest importance of determining the vascular age lies on the preventive level.
