Giovanna Garzoni, educated in natural sciences, is one of the first painters of still lifes and miniatures. In Venice, she married portraitist Tiberio Tinelli, a friend of Karel Škréta.
After the early breakdown of her marriage, after a stay in Naples, at the Savoy court in Turin and at the Medici in Florence, she arrived in Rome as a famous painter. For her enchanting still lifes with fruit, painted on parchment (the first examples of color "scientific drawings"), she could allegedly ask for any price.
