Abstract
The name of the Humanities is based on the term "'Humanitas". This concept has already undergone a number of semantic changes in antiquity.
The chapter summarizes them and deals also with the meanings of the word "Humanism". The purpose of the chapter is to show how these two concepts can contribute to the education of today's students.
