Already in ancient Egypt, people were telling stories about pharaohs, magicians of olden times, shipwrecked survivors, greedy officials, extraordinary adventures and mysterious lands. Some of these stories have come down to us and belong to the world's oldest literary texts.
This book presents the best known stories, written in so called classical Egyptian. The main part of the book consists of new Czech translations of the four most famous classical Egyptian stories: The Tale of the Shipwrecked Sailor, the stories from the papyrus Westcar, The Tale of the Eloquent Peasant and The Story of Sinuhe.
All of the texts presented in the book are accompanied by plentiful notes and commentaries concerning ancient Egyptian language and facts about Egyptian culture, religion and history. Each text is also accompanied by a short introduction concerning the history of its finding and its historical and cultural context, which help the reader to better understand the period when the individual stories take place and suggest possibilities of their interpretation.
