Abstract

This review is about the book of Josef Fulka. This book is divided to five main chapters.

Introduction describes two mistakes about sign language in general - that there is just one universal sign language and its iconic nature, which means the idea that all signs of sign languages mirrors entities, which are necessary to name. Then there is chapter about deafness as a deficiency and chapter about deafness as a difference.

Chapter about origin of language tries to solve the question whether gestures are direct predecessor of language or not. The last chapter describes manual communication codes established by Merleau-Ponty.
