14-Mercaptotetradecyl-trimethylammonium bromide, suitable as a surfactant for gold nanotubes

Publication

Abstract

One of the possible and suitable surfactants useful for treating the golden nanotubes is the new substance of 14-mercaptotetradecyl-trimethylammonium bromide. The process of preparation of 14-mercaptotetradecyl-trimethylammonium bromide according to the invention consists in reducing the diethyl ester of tetradecane-1,14-dioic acid with a reducing agent in a dried aprotic solvent under an inert atmosphere while forming tetradecan-1,14-diol, which is treated with a brominating agent in a dried aprotic solvent while forming 1,14-dibromtetradecane to which potassium thioacetate is continuously added via a syringe pump in a dry protic solvent environment under an inert atmosphere while forming the 14-bromotetradecananthioester, which, in a dried protic solvent environment, under an inert atmosphere, by the action of acetyl chloride, initially provides 14-bromotetradecanethiol, which is treated with a solution of trimethylamine in a dried aprotic solvent environment in an inert atmosphere while forming the quaternary ammonium salt of 14-mercaptotetradecyl-trimethylammonium bromide.
