The aim of the article is to acquaint with the life of the Klánovice Children's Home through the issues of institutional education in the period between 1948 and 1989. A short historical excursion will present the situation in the fi eld of care for needy children during the First Republic and important pedagogical personalities in this area.
Subsequently, the article will follow how society in the then Czechoslovak Republic approached the issue of children's homes. Attention will be focused on the overall concept of socialist institutional education, pedagogical approaches to children in institutional care, its legislative anchoring.
Th e second part of the article will present the results of qualitative research based on analysis of archival materials. The findings were compared with the current reality of children's lives in this faci- lity.
The results of the research suggest that many problems associated with the institutional education period 1948-1989 are still relevant today. In the discussion, we refl ect on the future of children's homes and their place in today's inclusive education.
