History of ADHD as diagnosis

Abstract

ADHD is nowadays a relatively well-established diagnostic category that has been in the literature for nearly 150 years. This review provides an overview of the development of this term from the first mentions of related symptomatology starting at the turn from the 18th to 19th century, over concepts in 20th century, especially in the sense of Minimal brain damage and Minimal brain dysfunction up to the present.

It focuses in depth on the concepts that went beyond the actual definition of ADHD in DSM-III in 1980. The development of this diagnostic category from DSM-II to the current definition in DSM-5 is also described.

As well as development of the diagnostical category "Hyperkinetic disorder" published in ICD 10. The article summarises complex overview of advances in under-standing and diagnostical definition of neurodevelopmental disorder ADHD.
