Damage to ecosystems by excessive nitrogen deposition and expression of the value of its critical load

Abstract

Nitrogen is a key nutrient of life on Earth. Its excessive input into terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems represents one of the most serious threats for the environment.

Soil and water acidification due to excessive nitrogen is not as serious threat as it was during the 1970s and 1980s, but the attention has turned to the nitrogen impact on biodiversity, air, soil and water quality and human health. The article presents nitrogen critical loads for ecosystems i the Czech Republic.
