Abstract

Increasing prevalence of patients with COVID-19 infection represents a major problem of current health care. Adequate prevention and treatment of this disease requires exact knowledge of patients' subgroups with higher risk of infection or more severe course of disease.

Patients with type 2 diabetes, in particular the ones with diabetic complications and poor glucose control represent a significant high-risk group as far as more severe course of disease is concerned. An increased risk is not only due to presence of diabetes but also due to its comorbidities - in particular obesity arterial hypertension and micro- and macrovascular diabetic complications.

In this article we summarize major risk factors increasing the risk of severe course of COVID-19 and basic principles of antidiabetic treatment in patients with diabetes and COVID-19
