Abstract

Georges Canguilhem, who was the student and successor of Gaston Bachelard at the head of the Institut d'histoire des sciences et des techniques, is one of the most prominent personalities in 20th century French thought. Canguilhem was a professor at the Sorbonne in Paris, where his students included Michel Foucault, Gilbert Simondon, Gilles Deleuze and Jacques Derrida.

He is an author who remains undiscovered here in the Czech Republic and whose important work from 1955 The Knowledge of Life was first published in Czech only recently (2017). The present conference proceedings contain texts presented at the first international conference here dedicated to Canguilhem.

It presents reflections on the basic themes of his thinking, which include, inter alia, the question of the relationship between normal and pathological; the problem of life and its cognition; the history of medicine, and the theory of health.
