Memory as an ideological question: a semiotic inquiry

Abstract

The lecture proposed a reflection on the relation between semiotics and ideology in relation with the theories elaborated by Rossi-Landi, Verón and Lotman. The attempt to characterize an inner core of the labile question of ideology has been connected with another complex concept, that of "memory", as discussed by the scholars from the field of the memory and heritage studies.

As intrinsically ideological, memory can be seen as a perfect conceptual setting for clarifying certain aspects of the huge set of problems that ideology puts in place; this provides the basis for the proposal of a thesis on the ideological value of the question of the social memory. Such a proposal is founded on the memory model proposed by Elena Esposito (2008), known as systems-theory approach, and the possible points of connections with the model of the semiosphere, both kind of systems whose mechanism is structurally similar to the ideological one.

In conclusion, some images of murals from Northern Ireland are shown as a case study valid for articulating a first partial theoretical suggestion for the analysis of ideological contents, through a schema articulated in four macro-categories.
