Abstract

This research deals with a unique institution in the Czech penitentiary system: prison tutors - who play the most important part of the re-socialization process - from the perspective of those who are in the centre re-educational effort. The paper is designed as a qualitative field research.

Structured interviews with the inmates were collected, data analyzed by the method of clusters and then interpreted by an expert group. The results show that the prisoners have an ambivalent relationship to their tutor.

On one hand they perceive the prison tutor as a person with an impact on the execution of their sentence, on the other hand the role of prison tutor is of low status, mostly seen as having a service function within the context of a prison.
