Abstract

The pattern of status homogamy in a society shape implications of social standing of the family for next generations. Studies of homogamy typically focus on newlywed or prevailing marriages in the population.

For the assesment of the consequences for next generation is, however, more important how homogamous are the couples when they have and bring up children. The goal of the paper is to asses how educationally homogamous were married parents of newborns in 1990, 1998 and 2007 and to compare homogamy of married and unmarried parents in 2007.

Two hypotheses are tested. First, which was not prooved, expected to find increase in homogamy of married parents of newborns over the studied years, corresponding to observed growth of newlyweds‘ homogamy.

Second hypothesis suggested that educational homogamy of married parents is similar to the homogamy of unmarried parents. This expectation was confirmed.
