Topical treatment of erectile dysfunction with alprostadil in diabetics, results of a prospective study
Abstract
Erectile dysfunction is defined as the inability to achieve and maintain an erection sufficient to perform satisfactory sexual intercourse. Erectile dysfunction has been well known for more than 20 years as a marker of increased cardiovascular risk, especially in younger men.
Erectile dysfunction is a common complication of diabetes, accompanied by 35 75 % of diabetics.The ideal treatment for erectile dysfunction with respect to the patient is easy to administer, non-ivasive and painful, highly effective with minimal risk of side effects. Vitaros(R) is a topical cream approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
The active ingredienst is alprostadil 300 μg, the pharmaceutical equivalent of endogenous prostaglandin E1. Unlike oral phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitors, alprostadil acts independently of the psychological and neurological components of the erection proces.
We presented in the arcticle the results of a non-interventional, post-marketing prospective study with topical alprostadil in the treatment of ED in diabetics.
