In my contribution, which stems from the field of history, I will concentrate on the transformation of the Forecasting Institute of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in Czechoslovakia and later in only one of its successor states - the Czech Republic. The institute was formed in 1984 and dissolved in 1993.
This time period allows for an observation of the transformation from a state-socialist system to a capitalist one. The main method of inquiry is new institutionalism which serves as methodological framework of my project.
First, I will offer concise history and development of the institute during the late socialism period. The roots and intentions behind the creation of the institute as an entanglement of efforts from both the political and scientific sphere in 1984 reveal its specific position in the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences.
In the main part, I use as a framework the transforming Academy. It shows how the Forecasting institute tried to deal with the new state of affairs and adapt to new language and expectations.
But it fared poorly in the new evaluations and faced the plans of the management of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences to disband it together with the Economic and Social-economic institute as they wished to create a brand new one. The Forecasting institute was too much defensive and did not make enough concessions and in time.
The contribution follows this process and the negotiations between the CSAS management and the Forecasting institute in depth.
