Israel?s Alliance with the Enemies of Egypt in Exodus 1,10

Abstract

Exod 1,10 mentions an alliance of Israel with enemies of Egypt. The same motif appears in a broader form in the Book of Jubilees and in a passage from Manetho?s Aigyptiaka that survived in Josephus? Contra Apionem.

The comparison of Exod 1,10 with Manetho?s story indicates that the latter uses an older and more original form of the tradition, while the biblical version is a reinterpretation. The deployment of the motif in the Jubilees may be influenced by its Egyptian form as well.
