Frontal Brain Reactivity to Sexual Stimuli in Paraphilic Rapists: FMRI Study

Publication

Abstract

Every year, 80.000 of women in Europe are raped by male strangers (FRA, 2014). Some of these men, if convinced, are state ordered to a civil commitment based on a diagnosis Paraphilia NOS - nonconsent.

Penile response of diagnosed rapists is different from that of controls or of diagnosed sadists (Harris, 2012; Seto et al., 2012) and it does not show a clear preferential pattern, which greatly complicates understanding and validation of this diagnostic taxon. In order to determine functional underpinnings of this differential reactivity, we conducted study which compared brain reaction of rapists and controls to female genital display in various emotional contexts (distressed, neutral, flirting, aroused, control).
