The question of protestant identity is only possible in context of divided Christianity. The task of the Protestant Christendom is therefore to determine what it can share with all others Christian believers and where it differs from them ? and why.
The protestant identity, however, is no static concept, fixed in confessions or church orders, it grows and developes in contact with new situations and challenges, which are presently marked by the ecumenical encounter. To fulfill this dynamic task the protestant churches have the effecive instrument of synodal procedures.
