Changes in the reproductive behaviour of the Czech population occurring after 1989 have significantly affected the age structure. The more significant the changes at national level, the greater the regional change.

The fall in the fertility rate, rising life expectancy, and new spatial patterns in migratory behaviour have significantl affected the population age structure in the Czech regions. This study focuses on Czech districts (LAU 1) and describes changes in the regional differentiation of three main age categories (pre-productive, productive, and post-productive) before presenting a district typology based on these categories.

The results confirm the existence of territorial changes in the population age structure. Analyses of regional changes in age structure are an important resource when planning and ensuring accessibility to education, social services and health care, and other services.
