Abstract

Psalm 136 in the Book of Psalms is called "The Great Hallel" (Song of praise) in Jewish sources from the 1st century. The article reviews its structure and content while comparing similar verses in parallel psalms and other Biblical verses in which the historical events in the Psalm are described.

In the Psalm there is a refrain that is repeated in every verse that preserves the form of its utterance in the liturgy at the ancient Temple in Jerusalem; we review the full range of interpretations for this refrain. Previous commentaries and articles have not given an explanation for the main theme that unites all parts of the Psalm.

Understanding the internal order of the three subjects glorifying God: the Creation of the world, the miracles of the Exodus and daily human existence - reveals one theme that rhymes the Psalm - God the Creator of the world involved in the history of the transformation of the Children of Israel into a nation - Is the God who sustains us in our daily existence. According to the wording of the Nachmanides (1194-1270), this has a special expression - a 'hidden miracle'.
